I picked up a new lens today.  I got a Canon EF 50mm prime f/1.4.  So far I like it a lot.  Far faster (lets in more light) than my kit EF-S 18-55mm lens.  Best part of the lens is the fantastically shallow depth of field it offers.  Take a look.

50mm ISO 320 f/1.4 1/100sec

49mm ISO 320 f/5.6 1/13sec

The new lens is on the left, kit lens on the right.  Both lenses are set at the largest aperture possible on each.  As you can see the prime lens had a much shallower depth of field.  The label on second bottle in line is completely unreadable with the 50mm lens where as with the 18-55mm lens you can clearly read the label on the bottle.  The blurring phenomenon is called Bokeh, very useful in portraiture and macro photography.

Another great advantage of the new lens is how much light it lets in.  The picture on the left was taken with a shutter speed of 1/100 of a second, almost nine times faster than the 1/13 of a second with the kit lens, with the same light setup.

Definitely looking forward to playing with this lens more.  Also hoping to use it to shoot some movies soon.
